Lumen
Lottery

What really lies behind the numbers of the Eurovision Song Contest?
An analysis in lumens, and its consequences.

Who counts the light?

Light cannot be held on to. It strikes the retina, triggers emotions, and in that very moment is already gone.

What remains are numbers.

The experiment in three acts

Liverpool 2023. Malmö 2024. Basel 2025. Three editions of the Eurovision Song Contest, three luminous flux values that together tell a story the industry has not yet discussed loudly enough:

Luminous flux, ESC main stage year on year

  • Liverpool2023
    27.5million lumens
  • Malmö2024
    41.1million lumens
  • Basel2025
    63.6million lumens
  • Vienna2026
    67.8million lumens *

* Calculated from the Main Rig Patch ESC 2026 Vienna (version 10); official measurement pending.

Why these numbers are more than showing off

The Lumen Lottery was not a quiz.

It was an invitation to think about an equation that is systematically left out of discussions about large show productions.

Behind every lumen is a watt. Behind every watt is a connected load. And behind every connected load is a generator, mostly diesel-powered, mostly outside the cameras’ field of view, always running.

By our calculations, the ESC 2026 main rig in Vienna drew almost 1.84 megawatts of electrical power for the fixtures alone. That is not 1,840 light bulbs. That is the base load of a medium-sized town, for a show lasting a few hours.

LED and laser technology have multiplied the luminous flux per watt. The Vienna rig was expressly conceived as a Green Production, with LED and laser sources only and no discharge lamps. And yet the absolute values keep rising.

More efficiency has not led to less consumption, it has led to more light. The headroom gained is immediately invested in more spectacle. That is the logic of every technological optimisation in show business.

What Vienna showed

While the competition was still running, we calculated the ESC 2026 fixture list, manufacturer by manufacturer, fixture by fixture, luminous flux by luminous flux. Validating our method against the Basel 2025 production showed a deviation of under two per cent from the previously determined value. That is not a bad approximation for an extrapolation from manufacturer datasheets and patch screenshots.

The numbers add up. The question remains open.

Because light and book pages have more in common than you might think: both need someone who looks closely.

The Lumen Lottery was an attempt to give an industry that works with light every day a number back, a number that makes visible the extent of technical energy, engineering and creative will in these productions.
