Is the Light Operator Merely a Technical Actor?
Reordering creative responsibility
A turning point for the profession
The events industry is undergoing fundamental change, driven by technological innovation and rising creative demands. In this dynamic environment the light operator holds a central position. The current initiative of the IGVW1 to standardise the profession marks a turning point whose consequences need careful analysis.
Technology and artistic vision
The light operator’s role combines technical precision with artistic vision. This symbiosis is especially clear at live events, where spontaneous creative decisions are required. Much like a musician interacting with the stage performance in real time, the light operator creates visual experiences that captivate the audience2. Artistic autonomy shows most clearly in “busking” (improvised lighting control during a live show), where unique works of light art arise on the spot.
A particular richness of the profession lies in the variety of professional backgrounds. Career changers from various crafts and technical fields bring valuable perspectives and contribute significantly to innovation in the industry. This diversity promotes artistic development and technical progress alike.
Security and recognition
The socio-economic dimension underlines the importance of artistic recognition. Access to the Künstlersozialkasse (KSK, the German artists’ social insurance) secures affordable social protection in an industry with fluctuating income3. In addition, VG Bildkunst opens up new ways of exploiting creative light art, especially in the digital sphere and on social media, which taps additional sources of income4.
Criticism of the process
The current process by which the VLLV e.V. and its working group are developing the profile of the profession, however, raises critical questions. The dominance of established lighting designers in the working group and the lack of involvement of the broader industry suggest that particular interests are being pursued. Particularly worrying is the attempt to downplay the artistic dimension of the profession, which could exclude light operators from important rights and remuneration.
The seemingly strategic focus on a purely technical definition of the profession could aim to reserve copyright exclusively for lighting designers while avoiding KSK contributions. This short-sighted strategy not only endangers the social security of light operators but also undermines trust within the industry and stifles its capacity for innovation.
Recognition as an artistic profession
Recognising the light operator as an artistic profession is decisive for the future viability of the events industry. It would not only strengthen the economic and social situation of this professional group but also promote creative diversity and innovation across the industry. A balanced, inclusive approach to developing the profile of the profession is therefore indispensable to unlock and preserve the full potential of this important role.
This realignment must reflect the reality of the industry, in which light operators prove every day that they are far more than technical executors. A fair and forward-looking definition of the profession should encompass both technical expertise and the artistic dimension in order to secure the quality and innovative strength of the events industry in the long term.
