Open-Busk-Jam
No rehearsal. Just light.
Live lighting improvisation at the console. An initiative of the ZentrumNeueLichtkultur (ZNL) in cooperation with leatcon.
The premiere
Two lighting desks. Plenty of light. Loud music. And the question every host knows: will anyone dare?
On 6 October 2026, the Open-Busk-Jam premiered at leatcon in Hamburg. The Live Stage opened at 17:30. On the host’s desk lay a stack of cards, A5 landscape, cut down to keywords. In case the host had to fill the gaps.
It turned out differently. The desks were occupied throughout. Young operators grabbed the faders, without rehearsal, without warning. Nobody missed the transitions.
The young generation wanted to experience light. They did not want to hear an older gentleman explain how to experience light. It is the finest defeat a host can take.
What the evening showed
The format carries itself.
An open desk is a better invitation than any announcement.
And sometimes the best hosting is the hosting you do not do at the right moment.
The format
Format
Live at the desk
Busking means playing light live by hand instead of running a programmed show. At the Open-Busk-Jam, lighting operators play to tracks that are only started in the moment. No pre-listening, no rehearsal, pure improvisation.
Principle
Jam, not battle
No duel, no loser. As in a jam session, everyone gets a solo and the room honours every moment. Prizes are planned in categories, from “Boldest Moment” to “Most Beautiful Mistake”. That celebrates risk instead of punishing it.
Next generation
The desk is open
An open desk lowers the threshold. Whoever dares moves into a session. Established operators are witnesses, not a jury. A fearless stage brings young talent to the front.
Visibility
See the authorship
A camera mirrors the hands at the desk onto the screen. The audience sees who is making the light right now. Lighting design has authors, even when they usually stand in the dark.
Why leatcon
leatcon is a communication and networking trade show. That is the right setting for a format that wants to bring people to the desk and into conversation.
The Open-Busk-Jam is an icebreaker and a conversation starter. “Meet the Operators” afterwards is meant to turn the experience into real contacts.
The position of ZNL
The ZentrumNeueLichtkultur holds that operating a lighting desk at live concerts is an art form in its own right. The Open-Busk-Jam makes that thesis visible and tangible for an audience.
Thank you
The music by HEFFTICK rocked throughout and delivered exactly the drive a session without rehearsal needs.
Thanks to leatcon, JB-Lighting Lichtanlagentechnik GmbH and Colight&Sound for their support and for trusting an experiment.
The next edition is already in planning. The hosting cards are coming along again. You never know.
Anyone who wants to take the desk or support the jam can write to us via the contact page.
And who will be the first to dare at the next one?
